Summer Arts Camp at Parliament Street Library
August 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19, 2016
KUT 7 members, Ksenia, Tijana and Claudia facilitated 5 sessions of Summer Art Camp at Parliament Street Library. Participants worked as a team to create a story using theatre, music, masks and props. They performed the collaborative story for family, friends and their community of Cabbagetown. The performance was followed by a celebration with pizza and other refreshments.
Participants joined in a quick warm-up, stretching their bodies and imaginations for the day to come. Each session began with a visual journal activity where campers covered a large roll of paper with their thoughts and inspired images using markers, pastels and tissue paper. Participants were presented with unique challenges to complete each session. Many campers stated that this activity was their favourite part of the program. The Sketchbook Challenge required the campers to fill every page of their sketchbooks in 5 minutes. This process continued several times, each time participants used different materials to build onto an image.
Participants dived into their imaginations with the Exploring Creativity in Depth™ program and created unique pastel drawings. Each drawing began with a visioning exercise where campers explored paintings, by Canadian artists, using their imagination. Campers commented that the process was fun and noted that sometimes you can get ideas from different artwork. Participants then discussed each drawing, focusing on the meaning and transformation of the pictures.
Together, campers created a story using their drawings. They developed characters to complement the collaborative narrative and created a dialogue. As the week continued, participants crafted masks, sculptures and props to bring their characters to life. Some of the characters included the Illuminati, Michael Phelps and a Capybara. Each session was dedicated to expanding their story.
Participants performed their story for family, friends and library patrons on the final session. Campers immersed themselves into their characters and the narrative while they performed in front of their ECiD drawings. Parents appreciated that the sessions were centred on teamwork. One parent enjoyed that her children exercised cooperation in a fun and imaginative environment.
